Hollywood, CA, United States (4E) – Matt Damon is set to star in a new film entitled “Great Wall” but actress Constance Wu believes that there is a lack in diversity as she pointed out that their heroes in China do not look like one bit of the “The Martian” actor.
“Great Wall” follows the story of the actor playing the role of a warrior showing the historic Chinese defenses. The “Fresh Off the Boat” actress took to Twitter to post a lengthy message about her disapproval over the film’s characters stereotypes.
Wu shared, “On The Great Wall: We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that only a white man can save the world. It's not based on actual fact. Our heroes don't look like Matt Damon. They look like Malala . Ghandi . Mandela.” She added that Chinese people do not need salvation as they like their color and their culture as well as their own strengths and stories.
Wu added that people usually think that only a huge movie star can sell a movie but it is never a guarantee. She then went on to suggest that if white actors are forgiven for having a box office failure once in a while, why can’t a person from China sometimes have the same failure. She noted that it would be cool if Hollywood would risk to have an actual Chinese actor be the hero of the movie. Wu said that the producers and the staff of the movie will then get “mad respect,” which she believes is more important than money.
After her lengthy message, Wu tweeted another statement to clarify that she is not blaming Damon or the studio or the Chinese financiers but she just had to put her thoughts out there for awareness.
This is not the first time that Wu talked about such. Earlier this year, Wu talked to Vulture and shared that Asian actors are being excluded from leading roles. She shared, “Asian erasure is largely based in systemic bias and microaggression.”
Damon and the other people involved in this report are yet to comment.
