Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – Diego Luna, one of the stars on “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” shared the story of a fan who took her father to the movies to see the flick and the actor, who did not hide his heavy Mexican accent.
The fan talked about how it felt to see Luna, also a Mexican, to be talking the same way they do and how important it is to see diversity on screen. The tweet showed an image from a Tumblr post talking about her and her father’s experience.
The story started off by saying that the fan wanted her Mexican father, who has a thick Mexican accent, to experience what it was like to see a hero in a film who spoke the same way her father did. The fan continued to say that she was not sure if the flick will resonate with her father but she took her to the cinema anyway and when Luna’s scenes were up, her father talked about how the actor has a heavy Mexican accent.
The fan continued to say that when they were on their way home, her father asked her again if she noticed Luna having an accent. She said that she noticed it and compared it to the accent that her father has. Her father then went on to ask if “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” made a lot of money and the daughter said that it was the second highest grossing 2016 flick.
Her father then asked her why Luna did not change his accent and the daughter said that the actor talked openly about keeping his accent and how the actor is so proud of being a Mexican. That made the fan’s father happy and started telling her daughter about the other Mexican actors who should be in American movies. She ended her story by saying, “Representation matters.”
Luna played the actor Cassian Andor in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” He said on his Twitter post that he got emotional reading the story so he decided to share it. He acted alongside a female lead, played by Felicity Jones. “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” grossed around $801.9 million as of writing at the global box office.
