Houston, TX, United States (4E) – The controversial Texas bathroom bill met a number of celebrity opponents after Alicia Keys, Cyndi Lauper , Jennifer Lawrence, Lady Gaga and Laverne Cox signed an open letter asking Texas lawmakers to reject the bill, Senate Bill 6, as well as other anti-LGBT legislation that were filed at the state legislature.

The open letter was signed by more than 135 musicians and artists. The bathroom bill of Texas is patterned from the North Carolina bathroom bill. Transgender people are not allowed to use the bathroom of their choice if their gender in their birth certificate does not correspond to that choice.

The letter reads in part, “Please know that the creative community is watching Texas, with love for all of its people and for its contributions to music, art and culture. We are deeply troubled by the current legislation that would target the LGBTQ community in Texas.” The letter also said it is up to the celebrities to commit to doing everything within their power to make sure all their fans, crews, and fellow artists feel safe and welcome wherever they go.

The letter came after the legislative priority of Lt. Gov . Dan Patrick continues to be criticized and opposed. Many believe that if Texas will push through with the law, Texas might experience the same problem that North Carolina experienced in the past. Many businesses backed out from expanding in North Carolina after the transgender bathroom bill was passed. Just recently, the NFL said the Texas law might jeopardize the state hosting future championship games.

The other stars who signed the letter are Amy Poehler , Emma Stone, Ewan McGregor, Geroge Takei , Jimmy Kimmel, Sting, Janelle Monae , Carrie Brownstein , Tegan and Sara, Amy Schumer , Kesha , Britney Spears, and Wilco .

The lawmakers from Texas have not yet commented on the matter.
