Las Vegas, NV, United States (NewsBahn) – Miss District of Columbia Deshauna Barber captured the Miss America crown Sunday night in the competition held at T-Mobile Arena off the Las Vegas Strip.
When queried on the issue, the Department of Commerce IT analyst and Army Reserve logistics commander gave her staunch support to women serving in the military, which some felt helped her seal the win.
"As a woman in the United States Army, I think it is an amazing job by our government to allow women to integrate into every branch of the military," she said to a cheering crowd before. "We are just as tough as men. As a commander of my unit I am powerful, I am dedicated and it's important to recognize that gender does not limit us in the United States Army."
Miss Hawaii Chelsea Hardin, who sidestepped a question about who she would vote for president, was runner-up.
