Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – Zayn Malik has once again opened up about leaving One Direction, which happened last year at the middle of the band’s latest tour, and now he said that after his departure, he was “free at last.”
The 23-year-old singer talked to Dazed magazine about the matter as well as starting his solo career. Malik’s first ever album post One Direction, “Mind of Mine,” has become very successful despite fans initially not wanting him to leave the British boy band.
Malik pointed out in the interview that he did not know what to expect about his solo career noting, "I wanted to make that statement, that this was something completely separate from whatever was out there before. I kind of expected the fans that followed me before to be a bit freaked out by it. It was nerve-racking for me."
He then revealed that he knew his solo career worked out because people were able to listen to the mature context of his album. He mentioned that his fans have been telling him what they liked and what they did not via social media so he was able to gauge that generally, they liked his new album.
Not only his fans are commenting on his album but singer Taylor Swift also gave her opinion. Malik said that he spoke to Swift at his girlfriend Gigi Hadid’s house and the “Shake It Off” songstress said that she enjoyed the album. He added, “She said she thought I was cool and I kind of blushed a bit and didn't know how to take it.”
Aside from that, Mali talked about the music industry and the people in it being placed into just one genre their whole career. He shared, “I didn't feel good [in 1D ]. Do you know what I mean? And if you don't feel good…You need to be able to express what it is that you are. I'm free at last.”
Just recently, Malik had to cancel a performance in London citing his anxiety issues. In his Dazed magazine interview, Malik said that he stays the way he is and feels it is the best way to keep one’s sanity. He pointed out that people have to hold on to what they are and not let things get to their head.
