Des Moines, IA, United States (4E) – Ashton Kutcher may be the head of the family but his wife, Mila Kunis, and his two children taught him the greatest lesson regarding character according to the actor.

The 39-year-old talked at the Ron Pearson Center in West Des Moines, Iowa during his acceptance speech for his Robert D. Ray Pilliar of Character Award over the weekend. He received the award for demonstrating good character as a role model as he works with local schools in his native state and also co-founded the organization called Native Fund to help Iowans who are affected by disasters.

The father-of-two started with his speech by saying that he is the first person to receive the honor who was arrested when he was only 18 for felony burglary because of trying to break into his high school. He also said that he received the award even if he got pulled over by a state trooper while he was tripping on mushrooms and had his name on gossip magazines after being accused of being an adulterer in 2012.

Ashton added that being a role model is not about winning or losing but it is about leaning from the mistakes one made and how one perceived the world. He continued to share, "Because life doesn't happen to you, it happens for you. Every. Single. Time. And as long as you have love and kindness and optimism and a pursuit of something greater in your heart, you're the lucky one. So this award is for you. It is for my family, it's for all four of my parents, it's for my wife, who kicks my ass on character every day."

He shared a story about letting Kunis sleep in a little bit while he woke up early to prepare breakfast for his kids. Kunis then told him she does that every day and that is one of the characters she has that Kutcher is amazed with.

As for his learning from his kids, Kutcher shared, "When I had these kids, my wife and I had these kids and we got to share that amazing, amazing, amazing honor, my first response was, I wanted to call my parents and say, 'I'm sorry, because I never knew how much you loved me.'" Kutcher and Kunis’ kids are named Wyatt and Dimitri.

Aside from his wife and kids, he thanked his parents and twin brother and also talked about how his divorce helped him be better.
