Detroit, MI, United States (4E) – The lead singer of the bands Soundgarden and Audioslave, Chris Cornell, died at the age of 52 after he committed suicide by hanging himself.

A representative for the singer said that Cornell was found dead on Wednesday night at his hotel room at the MGM Grand Detroit hotel. Cornell has been touring with Soundgarden. A family friend did a welfare check on Cornell around midnight and according to reports, the wellness check was requested by his wife.

The family friend forced his way into the hotel room door and found Cornell on the bathroom floor. Eventually, the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office determined that he committed suicide by hanging. The representative of Cornell, Brian Bumbery, said the death of the singer came as a shock.

Cornell was a very famous rock star especially in the 90s as his fame was equal to that of Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder and Layne Staley.

It remained unknown if Cornell has had problems as of late or if he and his wife have been having misunderstandings. The reason why he killed himself remains unclear.

Many took to Twitter to mourn the death of Cornell. Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry said, "Very sad news about Chris Cornell today. A sad loss of a great talent to the world, his friends and family. Rest In Peace." Gavin Rossdale also took to the social media platform to say that he is saddened by Cornell’s passing as it came as a total shock. Rossdale added that Cornell was a great man, had a great band, and is a great loss in the music scene.
