Dallas, TX, United States (4E) – Police have charged the estranged wife of concert pianist Vadym Kholodenko with two counts of capital murder related to the deaths of their two young daughters.
Sofya Tsygankova , allegedly killed their daughters, identified as five-year-old Nika Kholodenko and one-year-old Michela Kholodenko .
Tsygankova stabbed herself after the killings and is now undergoing mental evaluation at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth Texas. She has not been yet been arrested but was served warrants on Monday, Benbrook police Cmdr . David Babcock said. Babock added that the bond would be set at $2 million.
The children were found dead in their beds late Thursday morning by Vadym . He lived apart from his wife and children but routinely picked them up from his estranged wife’s home in the mornings. Vadym told officials that Tsygankova was in an extreme state of distress at the time he found the children.
The cause of death of the children has not been determined yet as the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office said Monday that it had not completed autopsies. Officials, however, said that the children had no obvious signs of trauma.
As per court records, Tsygankova and Vadym have stopped living together since August of last year. They were married for five years before deciding to separate. Vadym filed for a divorce last November citing conflict of personalities.
Vadym , 29-year-old Ukranian born, has won the prestigious Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth in 2013. He was supposed to perform over the weekend with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. However, he was not able to attend due to the incident so he was replaced by Italian pianist Alessio Bax .
In a statement released by Vadym last week, he said, “The loss of my children will be with me forever. But I would like to say that I feel the support of the Fort Worth community and all people who are sending me messages all over the world.”
