Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – Hoda Kotb reveals more about her adopted daughter, Haley Joy, after the 52-year-old battled cancer that left her not capable of bearing her own child.
The “Today” show host announced her adoption last month and in the latest issue of People magazine, she talked more about her daughter, who she takes care with her boyfriend Joel Schiffman. Kotb said, "We just stayed in the apartment and ate and slept and burped and took naps, and that's it. That's all. But it's fun!"
The mother for the first time battled breast cancer 10 years ago and she said having a child was something she always wanted. She revealed she thought about it in the past and she believed she was not meant to have that but it was difficult to come to terms with it as there was a hole missing because of it.
She added, "It's one of those things where you think you've done it all, you think you've felt it all. But I just didn't know that this kind of love existed." Kotb also said she wanted to become a teacher before her daughter came into their lives because she could not have a child.
As for adopting, she said she talked about it with her boyfriend. She said she had doubts at first and asked Schiffman to think about it for a week and he replied he did not need a day because he wants to start the journey with her regarding having a daughter. Schiffman is not listed on the papers as Haley’s father but Kotb said her daughter will call him daddy.
Kotb also said sometimes she wakes up and could not believe she has a baby. She added, “But it feels totally real. I guess if you’ve been waiting this long for something, and you wish for it, pray for it, hope for it, wonder if it will ever be, and then it happens, nothing’s more real. Nothing.”
