Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” alum Janet Hubert commented on Jada Pinkett-Smith’s decision to boycott the Oscars this year and said that the wife of Will Smith’s decision was self-contrived.
A video was posted on Hubert’s Facebook page on Monday. In the video, she was heard saying, “I was looking at this ridiculousness people called a historic moment and I was annoyed. I was annoyed because it dilutes the movement when you only stand up for yourself."
She noted that she is a “real freedom fighter” because she stands up for other actresses and other people. She then went on to say that The Smiths, Will and Jada , irked her because they are “pretenders” and Jada not attending the Oscars this year was just because her husband was not nominated for an award.
Hubert added, “We are simply and merely entertainment. We take on and wear the masks of characters. That's what we're paid to do. Someone like Will Smith has not come up through the ranks like most actors, so for him to be complaining the most is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen.”
She added that there is a diversity issue in Hollywood but pointed out that the Oscars was never designed specifically for people of color. She noted, “There are actors who have never gotten an Oscar and have done amazing work. If you are waiting for an award of a little…gold statue and that's supposed to validate you, then you're not in this business for the right reasons.”
She proceeded to say that the Smiths have the power to do more for the black community as they have the money to do so. Hubert said that they should be mentoring young screenwriters or set up a program.
Jada then countered the statements of Hubert against them saying that her plea about the Oscars was about the people of color to “take back our power” so they can use it in all sectors of the community.
