Hollywood, CA, United States (4E) – Lena Dunham is once again in the spotlight after she talked about wishing she had an abortion and the “Girls” creator and star apologized hours after.
The actress was hosting “Women of the Hour” for her podcast and she said that she visited a Texas Planned Parenthood clinic years back. A girl then asked her to share her experience about abortion and noted that she has not had an abortion adding, “I wanted to make it really clear to her that, as much as I was going out and fighting for other women’s options, I myself had never had an abortion. And I realized then that even I was carrying within myself stigma around this issue. Even I, the woman who cares as much as anybody about a woman’s right to choose, felt that it was important that people know that I was unblemished in this department.”
She then went on to say that she admires her loved ones for undergoing abortion and noted that she wished she had an abortion. After her podcast, many commented via Twitter to say that she trivialized the awful procedure. One said, “FYI an abortion is not something you ‘get to have.’ It’s an awful experience one SHOULDN’T wish for like a gift from Santa.”
She then took to Instagram to post a photo of the word “Choice.” She said that her latest episode was meant to tell a complex story about reproductive choice in the United States. She added, “I truly hope a distasteful joke on my part won't diminish the amazing work of all the women who participated. My words were spoken from a sort of "delusional girl" persona I often inhabit, a girl who careens between wisdom and ignorance (that's what my TV show is too) and it didn't translate. That's my fault. I would never, ever intentionally trivialize the emotional and physical challenges of terminating a pregnancy.”
Dunham continued to say that her main goal was to increase awareness and take the reproductive choice more seriously. She then promoted a link for abortion in New York, Ohio, and Texas. She ended her apology by saying that she looks forward to fighting with all the pro-choice activists for more years.
