Palos Verdes, CA, United States (4E) – Chester Bennington, the deeply troubled frontman and lead singer of nu-metal rock band Linkin Park, hanged himself in his home in Palos Verdes Estates in LA County, California at around 9:00 a.m. PDT on July 20.

Benington was 41. He is survived by his wife and six children from two marriages.

Police confirmed Bennington’s death, which has stunned the music industry still recovering from the suicide by hanging death of Bennington’s close friend, Chris Cornell (lead singer of the American rock band Soundgarden), last May 18.

July 20 is Cornell’s 53rd birthday.

Police revealed Benington, who suffered from depression, was alone at home at the time of his death as his family was out of town. Bennington’s body was discovered by one of his employees, according to police.

It was well known that Bennington was struggling against the effects of drug and alcohol abuse, as well as depression, for years. Bennington had previously said he had considered committing suicide because he’d been abused when he was 11 years old by an older male.

Vicky, Cornell's wife, tweeted out a message following the news of Benington’s suicide: "Just when I thought my heart couldn't break any more … I love you T."

Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda tweeted, “Shocked and heartbroken, but it’s true. An official statement will come out as soon as we have one.”

A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Benington was to have given a concert in Boston next week with his band, Linkin Park.

Bennington and Linkin Park rocketed to success with their first album, “Hybrid Theory,” released in 2000. Hybrid Theory was certified diamond (10 million copies) by the RIAA.

Linkin Park then became one of the most successful rock bands of the 1990s, and took their success into the 21st century with the albums “Meteora” (2003) and “Minutes to Midnight” (2007). Both albums hit multiplatinum sales.
