Harlem, NY, United States (4E) – Entertainment mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs is set to open a charter school in Harlem, New York this fall.
According to reports, the rapper, actor, record producer and clothing designer announced on Monday that his Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School is set to open in the coming months. Combs was also born in Harlem and he said that being able to start the school is a dream come true for him.
Combs has been working on the launch of the charter school since 2011. He also spent years researching education models. Accordingly, he and Steve Perry, the founder of Capital Prep Magnet School in Hartford, Connecticut, will be overseeing the new school in Harlem once it has opened.
Combs added in his statement, “I want to impact the lives of young people in my community, and build future leaders. The first step is offering access to a quality education. Every young person should have the tools they need to succeed. All our children should be able to pursue their dreams. That is something I can impact with this school.”
Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School is a free, public school for students for grades 6-12. Admission will be open to all New York state residents and the applications will be accepted until April 1.
A total of 170 sixth and seventh graders will be selected to attend the school of Combs for its first year. However, enrollment will continued to expand until it could reach the capacity of 700 students.
It is unclear if Combs will be teaching any classes.
